UK and US ready to strike bilateral free trade deal ‘as soon as possible’

The United States is ready to strike a new bilateral trade agreement with Britain, according to the U.S. Speaker of the House.

Paul Ryan was addressing a Central London audience when he pledged his commitment to working with the president and the UK government to achieve a trade deal between the two nations.

“The United States stands ready to forge a new trade agreement with Great Britain as soon as possible”.

–  Paul Ryan, U.S. Speaker of the House

Mr Ryan’s commitment to a trade deal between America and the United Kingdom comes almost a year after former president Barack Obama threatened that the UK would be sent “to the back of the queue” should it vote to leave the European Union.

The Republican politician clashed with Donald Trump in 2016, holding back on supporting the businessman as his party’s presidential candidate. Following Trump’s nomination as the Republican candidate, Ryan finally announced his support for the TV star.

In Mr Ryan’s speech at London’s Policy Exchange he compared Brexit to the election of President Trump.

“We are seeing a renewal of first principles, of people reasserting their right of self-determination against arrogant and paternalistic elites. As President Trump has said, ‘the forgotten men and women will be forgotten no longer.”

– Paul Ryan, U.S. Speaker of the House

He also commended the Prime Minister’s call for an early General Election: “Times like these call for bold leadership, and Theresa May is certainly setting the standard.”
