Downing Street Reshuffle: David Lidington announced as Minister for the Cabinet Office

Former Justice Secretary David Lidington has been announced as the new Minister for the Cabinet Office.

It is thought that Mr Lidington will take on many of the responsibilities of Prime Minister May’s former deputy Damian Green, but without the title of First Secretary of State.

Damian Green was fired days before Christmas after he was found to have broken the ministerial code in relation to pornographic content being found on his parliamentary computer in 2008.

It is believed that the post of First Secretary of State will now remain vacant, as it has under some past administrations. The role is the most senior position in Downing Street other than Prime Minister, with the holder often described as the de facto Deputy Prime Minister.

It has also been announced that Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Chancellor Philip Hammond will remain in their respective roles.
